It’s good to be a man! Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness...” (Gen. 1:26) We are men! We are hairy, lumpy and at times we are a little sweaty and smelly. Our hairline recedes as our belly expands. We like power tools, war flicks and contact sports. We ooze testosterone! We love the smell of a two-stroke, gunpowder and tools make us drool, and best of all, we can “go” while remaining in a vertical position! We are the ‘Willies Jeep” of creation: Tough, utilitarian and built with a specific purpose.
That is the outward man though. That is the obvious. What are we really? If you were to peel away the furry, tough outer layer, what would you find? We are passionate, strong, dedicated and focused. We value honour, integrity, justice and valour. We are God’s earthly guardians, His men of valour. We will defend the right, even to the death.
Pop culture, within the last generation however, has been successful in portraying men in a different light. We are bumbling, clumsy and mindless idiots that can’t think for ourselves. We are portrayed as crude brutes with one track minds. We are ridiculed for our attributes, and our boys and young men are being convinced that to be a man and man-like is shameful, and must be corrected. We are constantly being told to get ‘in touch’ with our feminine side. Sadly, the male gender is in decline.
What should we do? Let’s do what the women did in the sixties and start our own “Masculine Movement”. We must reclaim who we are and embrace being men! We have to do one of the things we do best: Fight! We are not women! If you want to get in touch with your feminine side, go see your wife. She was meant to be your feminine side! Be the man she wants you to be. Real women are looking for real men: Men who aren’t afraid to be who they are, men who are not afraid to take charge, men who are not afraid to step up and be the hero. It’s time to take the bull by the horns!
It is time not only to tell our sons and young men what it is to be a man, but let’s show them! Show them the joys of being a man. Get dirty, get greasy, roll up your sleeves and show them the value of a hard days labour. Show them that there are times to stand and fight. Our women and children are desperate for real men. Let’s not keep them waiting any longer! Be their heroes!
Be a godly man of honour, integrity, justice and valour!
Verse to meditate on: Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. (1 Cor. 16:24)
